Manifold questions...

Hi guys,

As you may recall, last season I was dealing with a water intrusion issue into my cylinders on my '89 Mercruiser 4.3L non balance shaft engine. I had installed some Vortec heads and GLM manifolds after finding water in #2 cyl. The new build up resulted in more water intrusion on multiple cylinders. Well, I have since torn it back down. The heads checked out as non cracked (I had them rechecked) and the lower manifolds tested fine. The machine shop could not test the elbows. I just have a hard time believing that the block is so cracked that it put water into multiple cylinders on both banks. No block cracks like that. I'm beginning to suspect flappers or defective elbow gaskets. However, the manifolds were aluminum and new. It was hard to see if water had been running from the joint gasket when assembled and unassembled. My gut says these manifolds are leaking anyway. What do you all propose I do to rectify this situation? How does one test the integrity of an elbow?

On a side note, the manifolds, seemed warped at the exhaust port, but they tightened up just fine. This obviously puts torsional stress on the manifold. Could it be a crack that opens up under torque? I'm about to buy some other brand of AL manifolds.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Manifold questions...

If the gasket surfaces between the manifold and riser are not flat, they will leak. This has happened on the GLM manifolds in the past.

Ayuh,.... Put a straight edge across where the riser gasket goes, 'n check for Flatness....

I had to have 'em flattened on a beltsander, because the inner exhaust area was quite abit lower than the outside circumference...
The gasket squished on the outside, 'n allowed water into the exhaust cavity...

Re: Manifold questions...

Got the manifolds back from the shop today. Not only did they mill the manifold to elbow surfaces, they milled the exhaust ports. :)
As a secondary precaution, I bought some new exhaust shutters. I decided to replace those before putting back together the motor.
I loosened the clamps, wiggled off the elbow and (wait for it)...

The Y pipe has no shutters. At all. No sign of them. oO Ran Mr. Magnet down the Y. He found nothing. This is a fine kettle of fish. LOL
Where could they have gone? Do I just install the new and button her up?

Magnet won't do you much good. Ya gotta pull the pipe or maybe just pull the drive & see if you see them. I can believe someone would put it together w/out 'em! If they are in there & blocking the exhaust that ain't good either.

Nothing is blocking the exhaust I think because she is really pushing gasses through the hub nicely on her last run.... pulling the Y means a motor pull and that's not happening if I can help it. Aren't the older shutters steel plate? What could I use to extract the pieces if they are down there? Might have to borrow my buddy's borescope.

Ayuh,... They're SSteel,... Pull the drive, 'n dig 'em out from that side...

Will do. Can you just reach in and grab them through the exhaust port? I'm going to be ticked if they are not in there... I HATE pulling the drive.

Don't be ticked off because you have to pull the drive. You know you can do that is under a half hour. Throw it into forward; remove the nuts and shaft holding the lift cylinders; and remove the six nuts around the perimeter. Then tug, and it's off (usually). Hy
