Manifolds.. Major leaking around gasket. See pics

Hey guys,

After seeing rusting ( which as you can see, I have seen for a while.. although it wasnt like this when I bought it 8 months ago).. I have been nervous about Hydrolock. After a bad battery had me scared the other day, the boat is running well (thanks guys)

I didnt realize how these leaking gaskets caused all the rusting in the engine area. Wire brush needed big time.

So the boat obviously only see;s salt water. There have been times when I couldnt get to a hose, but this looks crazy. I am sure the guy before me had a bad job done as the riser bolts weren't very snug. The gasket looks older than the manifolds (besides the surface rust on the Osco manifolds, which all in all had nice paint).

Question is. Are these that bad? I don't see any rusting through, but look at that caked blockage! I am thinkng the gasket had something to do with it. Maybe I can clear out that one section and get these cleaned up.








I have a set of Fresh water manifolds with about 100hrs on them. They are not new, but they came from Michigan and look decent for a year or so.

I have new Sierra gaskets that I can install on these after I take a wheel to them and clean them up. What do you think? I did notice this riser gets hotter than the other ( still cant believe that isolated blockage).

Fyi do not use Sierra gaskets. They are trash. Try using a gasket that is graphite material. GLM makes them....

I don't have the expertise for an analysis of the rust situation but someone that does should be along shortly that can answer that, but repeatedly here the recommendation is to use only OEM gaskets, not aftermarket.

Ok. Well I pulled the gasket. Looks like the guy before me used the wrong gasket. Pretty stupid. Unreal actually..but doesnt suprise me. This explains the crazy leaking

Manifolds have nice open water passages.

Sure enough, I ordered gaskets 3 months ago. Went to take a look, same one..small tiny hole instead of open water jackets. Sierra

Do I need to spec differently?

Ayuh,... Those gaskets are the Right shape, but Wrong material...

Get the Oem gaskets made of metal, 'n graphite, that are shaped like Those....

Depending on the rest of the coolin' system, Most use the restrictor gaskets you pictured...

It's a stock 454 RWC system. That restrictive hole is supposed to be there?

Bondo is right. you have the right gaskets just the wrong material.

Looking at the pics i dont see any blockage.

besides a wire wheel, you will want to make sure the surface of both the manifold and riser are flat. I usually take the parts and mill the surface, however I have used a really big file in the past.

Thanks for the tip on making a good seal. My manifold and riser both have large oval holes where the small pinhole is. Why would they have a gasket restrict the flow?

Ayuh,..... So's the water don't run out so fast........

I think if ya straight-edge measure yer's, yer gonna find the centers High, 'n the outer edges, low....
Could be the risers, or the manifolds, or Both....

Ensure that sufficient solid wall thickness remains between the exhaust passage and the raw water passages.

When the exhaust manifold is removed, perform a visual inspection on the exhaust ports and valves.

The typical engine failure mode is exhaust deterioration, as shown in your images, "cold" raw entering the exhaust port impinging on the hot exhaust valve, making the valve brittle and fracturing, sending metal parts into the combustion chamber. A bad day...
