I will buy this manual but I want to be sure it will give a beginner info on how to repair or replace the tranny as you all suspect it's the problem as I can not get it in neutral yet although stiff I can rotate the tiller. No matter where I put the rotation when I turn the fly wheel the prop rotates counter clockwise. I will chalk the serial number to try to be sure of the number which is badly rubbed as best I can make out it is 1200327 Merc 28A with a Super Hericane power unit and shock absorbers. I live up in the mountains away from everything the closest boat guy never saw an old motor like this so I am on my own. I do appreciate all you help so far.

Hi MY,
I doubt the average library's generic shop manuals will cover service of the old Auto-Tranny Mercs. The official Merc manual for 1965 and prior models had a decent section on them.
As for it being written at a level for the beginner, I can't say. Depends on your level of mechanical knowledge and ability...
- Scott
