Guys,

I want to buy a manual for my 99 3.0L Mercruiser stern drive. I may be opening up a can of worms here, but which manual is preferred...Seloc or Clymer ? and why ? I am looking for the one geared to be relatively inexperienced do-it-yourselfer, not for the professional mechanic. Suggestions much appreciated .

BowriderBob
99 VIP 184
3.0L Mercruiser

I'd prefer the OEM manual..

but in a pinch I'd go the Seloc.. had a few over the years.. seem quiet good...
nothing is more detailed then the OEM manual,, particularly as they are only attempting to cover one model (or a range) not from year x to year y...

regards

Frank

I hate somebody who can't make up their mind, but...I have one of each. They are (relatively) cheap, good info, and if one can't tell you, the other one can. Don't think you can go wrong with either one.

I ended up with both of them too.
I can't really give a thumbs up to a particular book. They both seem to be catered to the back-yard guy. (or gal if you want to be PC !)

If opportunity presented itself however, the OEM/shop manual is the best way to go. Preferablly on CD !

I love my new Truck manual on CD Rom. It's awsome.

H.

Check out the Merc service manuals on ebay. OEM stuff is better than aftermarket, especially manuals. Can't address quality of Seloc, buy my Clymers Merc manual S**KS. Wouldn't buy it again. In fact, may sell it on ebay once my service manual arrives.

I'm inclined to get them all. But have to add that the most valuable reference book for me is often a good parts manual. For old outboards, they are often all that is needed. I have a couple of newer outboards ('90s), and I haven't been too impressed with the OMC service manuals --not sure why, but I guess it's the lack of those exploded parts diagrams I depend on.
