Manual release for trim?

I have a 1978 Evinrude 115 that I bought last year. Due to illness I haven't been able to run it in about 6 months. I did get a chance to winterize and everything but the trim seems to be working fine. The trim motor runs fine, but the cyliner that moves the motor up and down is stuck. The unit had a bad leak at one of the connections and I'm sure it drained completely while up for the extra long winter.

To make a long story short, a friend is having a birthday party on the lake tomorrow and I need a temporary fix to get out on the water. I have searched this board and found the manual release screw. This let the motor down, but there are two addition cylinders on the sides that the manual realease screw didn't seem to affect.

Is there another release for these other two cylinders? (Just to clarify - these are the cylinders that would make the slight adjustments while the boat is in the water - the release screw worked on the cylinder that would put the motor all the way into the trailering position).

Also, if I can get the motor down into a running position, is there anything I can do to keep it from coming up and out of the water when I hit reverse?

Many thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Manual release for trim?

The manual release will only let the engine go down against the trim cylinders. There is no other manual release.

You don't "hit" reverse. Snap the control into reverse. If the idle is OK, you shouldn't have a problem with the engine "jumping" up.

OK, thanks. Is there any way to lower the trim cylinders?

Might try having a friend push down(In) hard on the lower unit while you hit the down button or with the manual release open.

EDIT: Better yet, why not just raise the motor up and fill the resevoir with fluid and see if it will work...

I have tried to fill the revevoir with the engine raised and on the transum saver. It just won't move at all. It's frozen in place.

Engine tilted up to its extreme, locked there with the trailering lock lever. Fill the reservoir to overflowing.

Then apply 7 to 12 pounds of pressirized air (no more than that) to force the fluid into the air pockets which includes the one under the oil pump.

That should do it. You DO NOT want to have that unit in the water without PTT fluid in it. And no, there is no way to lower those trim rams without the unit being operatable.
