Re: manual starter return assembly
Start by getting a 3/8-16 nut, loosen the starter bolt all the way until it is free of the threads. With out pulling the starter bolt out of the starter, grasp the starter by the spring cup, and lift straight up. Put the 3/8-16 nut on the starter bolt, this will hold the entire assembly together. Lay the assembly off to the side, you now have a clear path to the carb. Note that when you put the starter back on there is a small lug on the bottom of the spring cup, this goes into a recess on the starter seat. Wear safety glasses when you do this, and don't have someone right there looking on. If that spring get's loose, it can really fly. Ask me how I know this? Here is one of thos places where a manual really helps, some of those rewinds can be quite a puzzle if you don't do them on a regular basis.
