I have replaced the manual starting cord on my '69 johnson HP and it keeps ripping in two. Any suggestions?

Does the cord look frayed where it rips in two? My guess is you probably have an interference with a sharp edge. In general, things need to be aligned so that the cord doesn't rub as it's going in or out. The cord is going pretty fast, so it can be a problem. Make sure it clears all sharp edges for the entire length of the pull. Any sharp edge that is unavoidable probably has a wear piece missing, like a gromet, to protect the cord as it slides by it.

good luck

Is it the right size cord for starters (no pun intended!)? Different motors use different diameter cord, if it's too big it may just be rubbing and wearing out, if it's too small it may not be strong enough.
Otherwise it sounds like it could be fouling on something, I'd take the starter apart and look for sharp edges.

Put a new cord on,make sure it doesn't rub on anything as you pull it out. Also be sure your pulling doesn't use ALL the rope,at least a turn or two should be still around the pulley at the end of your pull.
DHP

And use a braided cord. It's much smoother and stronger.
