Manual tilt, tilt cylinder fluid - what type is it?

I need to replace the fluid that was in my manual tilt, tilt cylinder (evinrude 70hp). On advice from my local outboard specialist I replaced it with hydraulic jack oil but this is very 'thin' oil and it has a minimal, if any, damping effect when I lower the leg of the outboard.

There is no info on this in my clymer manual so I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me what oil should be in that tilt cylinder/shock absorber.

Thanks, Dave

I refilled it by removing the cap on the top of the tilt cylinder (35mm pin spanner). I was unable to remove the cylinder so the existing fluid was removed as best I could but there was probably a residue trapped at the very bottom under the piston.

The fluid that was already in there was grey in colour and quite thick and emulsified. The jack oil, in contrast, is very light and fluid. I think it is too light and doesn't produce the right resistance going through the holes in the piston/ram.

I think you are right in that this is not a normally serviceable item but I was trying to pin down problems in the tilt mechanism and had thought the piston was jamming in the cylinder.

My local specialist has about as much knowledge on this as I do, ie minimal, so I don't think it is worth going back again.

I was hoping someone on the forum would be able to advise me.
