Hello - first of many posts to come (i have read most or all the threads on these subjects)
Just bought an old Cruisers Inc. 18? tri-hull (between 69 & 74) with an 1150 in-line 6, twin cylinder tilt. Ser No. starting 394XXXX
Has not been running for 5 years, owner died ? family sold it to me. Touchy subject but I think he bought it to fix it up or bought it and damaged the transom with the motor (no tilt lock pin). The lower unit actually creased/gashed the fiberglass at the drain hole. Some cracks along the port clamp as well.
Compression checked at 160 psi on all 6, has spark and tilt motor runs. (I rolled the dice)
First Issue
I believe this to be a 1974 and wanting an OEM Manual. I have talked to Merc publishing and they have it for about 90 bucks. Well 90 bucks is killin me being 20% of the cost the boat, motor and trailer. I can get most the parts I need to bring this back to life for that.
Looks like there are two that would do.

QUESTION ? does anyone have an OEM Manual for a 1974 1150 or copy of one that they would like to sell? (Any format)

Second Issue: Tilt/Trim (I have and worked on Benet trim tabs in my other boat, 82? Christ Craft 281)
Seller had been removing bleed screws to move engine up and down manually while being stored over the years. This pumped fluid out with every move up and down. Trim tank was empty. Motor runs.
I have a screwdriver in the second hole off the transom, through the clamps ? keeps the lower unit off the transom.
Have filled tank with new ATF and ready to start the bleed process per string and wanted to double check a few thing before I start.

QUESTION ? the vent cap (screw washer & seal) on top of the tank was loose. Should this be loose, snug or tight?

Controller - this has a 3 button control. Top button says UP. Center button says UP/OUT. Bottom button says IN
Motor runs when Bottom IN button is pushed alone. (IN only)
Motor runs when Center and Top are pushed together. (UP/OUT & UP)
Motor does Not run when Top button is pushed alone. (UP only)

Last QUESTION ? Is that correct?

Any insight on these issues would be greatly appreciated. I just don?t want to damage anything further.
Thanks
Paul

For that PT system you should use 5W-20 motor oil; the vent screw should be loose; the center button is to trim the motor up to the trim limit set by the adjustable trim limit switch on the Port trim cylinder. When you press the top and center button together the motor will tilt all the way up.

A lot of times the trim limit switch breaks. You can bypass it or continue to use the two buttons together to trim and tilt the motor. Replacement parts my not be available.

You do know how to bleed the PTT unit? Is it not the same as most PTT units.

I always used 5W-30 motor oil in mine....Trim limit switch should be on starboard Trim Cylinder Bracket. It will be spliced into the PTT harness with bullet connectors.

Thanks for getting back to guys...Good Stuff!!!

Yes, found the limit switch & stainless slide stop (or trip dog) on starb pistion.
Pressed Limit Switch from back side (still has boot on it) and feels & sound good. Reasonalbe resistance and clicks. Was wondering what that wire was for...
The motor may have been up when i quickly tested the tilt motor & switch, thus it should not have strated the pump in that position.

QUESTION - Does that limit switch also prevent the motor from lowering too much?
What prevents the motor from tilting too far down/in and contacting the tramsom?

BLEEDING - I am relying entirely on Chris's post of June 3rd 2008 / last cance to edit or amend before I go through it this evening (weather permitting)

The Fluid - well i took a survey of all the posts I could find and ATF won, I have in my Bennet unit, so i filled it with the dextron III. (been sitting overnight)
I have not started the pump yet and could pump it out & refill before testing.
My Strategery - Engine coming off for transom repairs as soon as I have this tilt working correctly or debugged. Want to do the Carbs, Fuel Pump, Impeller, Gear Lube & Plugs over the winter. I was going to use the ATF for flushing and testing only, then drain and remove the trim unit for the winter. Figured the ATF would show any leaks quickly and desolve any "suff" in the system.

YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS ARE WELCOME
PLEASE ADVISE
THANKS

Trim limit switch keeps you from trimming the motor up too far. They are normally set so when motor trims past the protection of transom clamps, on each side, the switch opens stopping trim motor. Usually we set the stainless steel tilt pin in the lowest hole to stop down trimming.

From what i know AFT is fine for the PTT unit, although I never tried it. Original recommendation was 5W-30 motor oil. I recommend you leave the pump filled with some oil/ATF over the winter to keep rust at bay.

Thank Again Chris
Thought I saw somthing in a string about 20 degrees of tilt max due to water intake. Clamp protection sounds overriding.
I will go with whatever stop point comes first (20 degrees or clamp clearance)
On the Pump Oil
Yes - after I get the engine and hoses off, I will empty, clean and refill for winter storage.
The pump label says SAE 20, going to try to stay with that or with the 5W-20 Merc850 is recomending.
This little jewel is to end up on the shores of lake Superior where summer lasts anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks..., thinking thinner is better.
Hope to bleed it out tonight...fingers crossed....going to have to keep an eye on my screwdriver tilt pin

Re: Manual & Tilt/Trim for 1974, 1150 in-line 6 with Twin Cyliner Tilt

Thanks Merc & Chris - the cylinders, control buttons and limit switch are working perfectly.
One thing I did notice;
When I first started, I opened the reverse lock vaulve to lift the motor up to fill position.
While I was lifting the motor I could hear the tank "gurgeling", figured it was the air from the lines pushing through the vaule.
After the bleed down and cycling a few times, I tried to lift the motor by hand again (after opening the reverse kock vaulve) and no luck.
Any Ideas on What Thats About ? Wasnt sure how much resistance there should be and it started raining again....
I did not want to start lifting this thing with brute force without checking with someone first.
i am afraid the bleed vaulve may now be plugged

Lifting the motor with the reverse lock disengaged is not easy. You need to lift hard enough to circulate the PTT oil.

I doubt you are strong enough to do any damage to the motor or PTT system. Remember it has to stand up to 100HP+, and you ain't no 100HP strong.

BTW - The manual release only allows you to lift and lower the motor when it is all the way down. If you run her up on the PTT motor. Opening the reverse lock will not allow you to lower it.

Thanks Again Chris, wasnt to worried about the PTT - its my back, arms and legs....Im 52..
Didnt want to try and lift the whole boat up. I shall try again...Its Go Time!
If i was to get into a jam i can always pop a bleed screw off and lift with less effort, now that i know how to bleed the system out correctly
thanks Again - Carbs are next.....
