I have a 1964 mercury 50 4 cyl. This might sound strange but i just noticed that I do not have anything to lift up or down the motor when it will go on the boat. There is no evidence that there ever was a power tilt on here. How else did these motors lift up and down when on the boat or trailering? Thanks Mike

Re: manual tilt??

Just put it in fwd gear to release the lock down and tilt it up, there is a lock to hold it up also--Bob

Re: manual tilt??

Thanks bob, I do see a little bar that goes across to hold the motor down. When you put it in gear the clamos go arounf the bar. But how would you hold the motor up say for traliering? There is nothing there. I guess I could make a little bar that goes threw the wholes to lock it in the up position? Or is there a specific bar for that? Thanks again<br />Mike

Re: manual tilt??

I am assuming this mototr had no power tilt opption. My question is do you guys know where I can get the tilt pins to hold the motor down when in gear and the pins to hold the motor up when tralering? My boat has nothing to hold the motor at all. Right now it can move up and down just by lifting it by hand and nothing locks it in place. Thanks<br />Mike

Re: manual tilt??

My 1971 50 HP has a tab on both sides that rotates to hold the engine in the up position. And yes you must put the shifter in forward before you can tilt it up.

Re: manual tilt??

My 68 merc was missing the tilt tabs, they can be made from angle iron and a long bolt. Just don't trailer the boat and rely on these as they are only good for tilting the motor while on the water, get a transon saver for towing. Until I made these tabs I kept a 1 1/2" wooden dowel in the splash well so I could tilt the motor while on the water.

Re: manual tilt??

the motor is NOT supposed to be locked down in fwd gear ..that way it can "kick up" if i hits something..<br />the reverse cams lock over that 'crossbar to allow backing up ..<br />also what hole you set the pin in determines the <br />"running trim "<br />I usta use a 1x4 to tilt the motor up while trailering( between the brackets with engine up)<br />be sure to use bungee or something over motor to keep it from bouncing out the stick and hitting to ground ( dont ask how I know that )

Re: manual tilt??

Are you missing the entire tiller assembly (can the motor be attached to a boat right now?). Or just the mechanism to hold the motor up? There should be 2 "hooks" on a rod in the center of the tiller assembly to hold the motor down when in reverse, are they there?

Re: manual tilt??

lion hunter, Yes the motor can be bolted to the transom. I guess from the sounds of it i am just missing the parts to hold the motor up. The motor can swing up and down freely with nothing to catch it or stop it from coming back down. Yes I have the 2 hooks that are on the motor itself when i put it in gears you can see it wanting to lock on to something but nothing there??? Thanks for the help<br />Mike

Re: manual tilt??

It sounds as though you are missing the tilt pin (which should be easy to get) and the tabs to hold the motor up. If the tabs are missing, the holes on each side should be there about 8" above the reverse locks. I used a piece of 3/8" allthread long enough to pass through both holes and then cut two pieces of 2" angle at 1 1/2 " wide. Drill a 3/8" hole in both pieces of angle. about 1/2" from top. To assemble pass the allthread through both holes on the motor and jam nut them with nylon nuts ( loose enough that the allthread will pivot). Then place the angle over the allthread and let the motor down to rest on it. Then weld the angle to the allthread. If it ever needs to come off (which it probably won't) you would have to take a grinder and cut it. I never even checked to see if they were available for purchase. Only took 15 min to build. Once again I would not trust this for trailering, get a transom saver.

Re: manual tilt??

Thanks lion..., I will fabricate those pieces like you explained. I have tried looking for the parts but no luck. I don't know if I am looking in the right places but anyway sound easy enough and definatley cheap enough to get the job done. I did buy a transom saver. Thanks again<br />Mike
