Stuart,

If your 50hp is like my 1976 65hp (blue band) the serial number should be on a plate on the front of the motor where it mounts to the boat (just below the carbs access panel). As for the manual you can probably get that from this site. Look above for "Helpful Links", click on "Manuals". Don't know if they deliver to UK but its a place to start. These folks at iboats.com are the worlds greatest. They can probably help you out. Good Luck.

Just to give you a bit of a range on the age of the motor, my father's '81 mercury also had a blue band.

Good Luck.

Brew

That looks to be either a 1978 or 1985 Model 4 Cylinder. Sorry I can't narrow it down further. I'm really leaning toward the '85 though.

Modellguide Click on Modellguide, then Mercury and finally 35-65Hk.

Probably 1978, the 1985 would have a brown band (assuming the cowling hasn't been swapped). Same color on the 'horseshoe'-shaped piece below the cowling, and says '500'?

I've had the Clymer and Seloc manuals for my 73 Merc 500 blue band. If you want easy explanations and pictures, get a Seloc manual. they show up regularly on ebay. if that doesn't work, try www.bookfinder.com and search for Seloc Mercury Outboard Vol. 2, 1965-1992 3 and 4 cylinder, tune up and repair manual. by Joan and Clarence Coles...an no, mine ain't for sale bro.

Dont think that this site will ship to the UK, but Amazon.com probably will, and I know that they have manuals, I bought a used one for $11.00 USD.

Stuart

Depends what country it was made in. USA 5+6 A's etc
Canada 7
Australia 8
Europe 9

I heard they stopped making bluebands in 82
I have a Aussie Light/dark blueband 50 not "500" ser 80558595
"Clamshell" cowling If yours is a UK one it would most likely have a 9 Number.
Sounds simliar to mine. Has thunderbolt too.
Check the pic herewith (50 in background)

I have the Clymer manual, and basically read it cover to cover and found 1 only significant thing.
Pge 342 Electric diagram states " USA above ser 5531629 Canada above 7143687 Australia above 8063984 and Eur above 9248005" That should pinpoint both our nos... I think mine is pre 1980. 5531629 is a 1980-81 from the site.

http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/81724e9b/bc/suzi.jpg?bcQugz.ApAONTXMA
