Manuel Tilt SNAFU--Somewhat Urgent!

Tomorrow is supposed to be dang near perfect. The spawn is on and I am in a pickle. The manual tilt is stuck in the locked down position. I just bought this boat and have a manual on order, but really wanted to get out tomorrow. There is a small length of cable under the tilt cylinder that is unattached at the starboard side (see pics). Im thinkin that this could be part of the problem, but I cant see where it should attach? Any help is most appreciated!!<br /><br />Edit Note: Pictures not pertinent..deleted.

Thats a FUBAR, not a SNAFU, SNAFU's have a Mercury sticker on them <br /><br />Can you see where the wire went to on the other side?

LOL!! I got rid of a Merc to take on this one!<br />Can't really see where it would go. Only place where there is any opening is right above the the channel above it. You can see where it (the channel)originates on the left hand side, but that doesn't make much sense to me. Dang forgot the Model # 96 J48ESLEDC

Can't be too quick ....... don't know what motor you have.... <br /><br />Cable is just for continuity,slows corrosion.<br /><br />Seeing the cable makes me think you may have trim and tilt.<br /><br />Best quess so far.Tell us more.<br /><br />DHP

DHP is right. That is the Bonding strap. There were some good posts on the "Tilt Assist" problems a while back. A search in the Johhny/Rude forum should help. Red button up above and enter "Tilt Assist"...

No tilt and trim...Manual tilt. Has a lever on the starboard side to lock in either up or down position. It is in the down position and stuck on lock. There is a piston and a tube on the side of the tilt cylinder. The piston does not appear to move when the lever is moved.

Did a search, doesn't match my problem Rick. It's not frozen, the mechanism to release the pin is not working.

brp evinrude is down, can't get diagram up. but my stick on sometimes, i just pull the pin, on the transom bracket, that adjusts the the angle of the motor. the trim adjustment pin.

Yep...that is a bonding strap. And what he has is a 48SPL with probably the tilt assist cylinder.<br /><br />One of a few things is wrong and is keeping you from raising the engine....<br /><br />The tilt assist cylinder is kapoot.<br />The cable to the cylinder is broke or has come lose from the top of the cylinder.<br />The cable shell at the end of the lever is broke.<br /><br />Can you see the cylinder at all? If you can, take a screw driver and pry up on the cable connection at the top of the cylinder. This will release the cylinder and allow you to raise the engine. <br /><br />Let us know what you see and can get to.

Ok, here is what I've got. Had to pull the motor to get at it, but it appears that the cable came unscrewed at the shell on the lever end. There is a brass threaded fitting at this end where the cable exits and connects to the shell. Does the brass fitting simply screw into the fitting on the shell? Also, the cable to the cylinder attaches to a "forked" plunger on the port bottom of the cylinder.

Ok, got the motor back in the "up" position and got the cable all screwed back together. I think I found the problem. The bracket clip that holds the fitting that screws into the shell is broken (see pic). Only the bottom clip is intact so my guess is that over time the fitting works it way loose. So a couple of questions. <br /><br />What is the name of this part (can't find it on ishopmarine parts list)? <br />How do I reconnect the cable and adjust it. I tried connecting the cylinder end first, but then the shell end fitting doesnt want to mate up with the clip(or remaining part of clip anyway).<br /><br />

It's called the Anchor Block....PN 334161. Bout $4 or so. You'll have to get it from a John/Rude dealer.
