Bought a NEW Mercury 2.5 Hp fourstroke Yesterday(June 12th,2015). Got it home and the manufacture date indicates 2011. Did I get and "NEW OLD" Engine? Should it not say 2015 or at least 2014??

Thanks

Good question!
I recently bought a used "2012 Mercury EFI 4 stroke" only to discover from the serial number, it has a manufacture date of 2006, but warranty start date of Aug 2012.

Is it a 2012? or 2006?

It is NOS (new old stock) and factory will still have to warranty it, I would check with seller or Merc if any updates was required from DOM to now.

That's what I was wondering. If they've done any improvements in the last 4 years to the engine. I'll call Mercury Customers Service and post back what I find/get told.

So I called Mercury Canada and they confirmed its a 2011 and has never been registered. They said that there has been no changes from the 2015 model, so I asked them what if I sold it. I would have to say it's a 2011 and technically 4 years old even though it has never been registered or used. He said, "Yes" , and I would have to talk to the dealer I bought it from if I wanted it exchanged.

This is not what I paid for. I paid for what I thought was a 2015 model (even though there has been no changes from the 2011 model)

Is it just me or am I making a big deal out of nothing!?

No you are not making a big deal out of nothing!

On my motor which I was told was a 2012 when I bought it privately, but is actually a 2006, when I went to a dealer asking about trading it on an electric start model, they would only offer 2006 Blue Book value...... almost $1200 difference from a 2012 Blue Book value!! Even though it was purchased and registered in 2012 and still has warranty until Aug...

Kind of sleazy of a Mercury dealer to sell you as new... IMO

That is exactly what I'm talking/wondering about 1Gunner!! Luckily I'm learning about this lesson on a $1000 engine and not a $5,000+ engine. So buyers be aware if your purchasing a "NEW" engine as it could cost you later when you decide to sell/upgrade a few years down the road.

Did he state it was a "New engine" or was it represented to be a "2015" engine. it is actually pretty common to see a "New" engine that is not a current model year, I was looking at a motor at a the Big C sporting goods store the other day, and it was a 2009 and they had discounted it to reflect it was a few year old new motor.

Every Mercury Dealer here in Edmonton, Alberta had the same price for the engine. This was the only dealer that had one in stock.

Is there somewhere we can input a vin number to confirm it's a current new... instead of new old stock.
I'd like to do this myself if possible instead of through a dealer as I've done before.... after the damage was done! :/

Heck, everybody seems to have an internet connected smart phone these days, if you need to call the manufacture, or ask to talk to the parts dept, they can look it up for you.
