Marine Batterys... Why Are They Bigger?

Hi, <br /> I am just curious why are marine batterys larger then regular batterys? I have run my boat on the verry small battery out of a Geo Tracker in a pinch and it did just fine.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Ben Hunter

A lot depends on the motor it's used for, and the boat systems requirements. You can have a too small battey, but it's hard to have one too big. Motors like EFIs require a lot of battery. Smaller carbed motors can get away with much less. 3L Stern Drives don't need more than your Regular Duty marine battery. But if you have a lot of electrical stuff on the boat, it might need more. Marine batteries have thicker lead plates to resist breakage considering the bouncing and banging boats do.

In general marine battery are the same size. For I/O just need enough cranking amps to start the motor with the bildge blower running. I think most large marine batteries are house batteries or trolling motor batteries not starting batteries. Both my batteries are group 24 and they last 6 years or more and do all I expect. My starting battery is a normal car battery and my Marine deep cycle is the same size.
