Marine Capet Glue over Epoxy Resin?

Hi all,

Just got through ripping out the floor of my Islander, and have the marine ply layed in, but not fastened yet. Since I want the floor bullet proof, I am going to roll epoxy resin on the bottom, but am wondering about the topside.

I read up on a lot of the posts on floor replacement, etc., and am wondering if I can glue the carpet right over the resin? I'm either too darn tired and didn't catch it, or can't read, or both. After two solid 12 hour days on the floor and bilge, I'm exhausted!!!

Thanks
Rick

Epoxy that floor all the way around. Top, bottom and edges. I assume you will be laying a layer of glass once you lay the floor? A coating of epoxy before you lay the glass will insure a good bond between the floor and glass.

No problem at all with any glue you might use and the epoxy. Just be sure to clean any blush off before you glue.

Re: Marine Capet Glue over Epoxy Resin?

Thanks Boomyal... Is the layer of glass necessary? I was going to use the two coats as a sealer. I went with 3/4 plywood instead of 1/2. I felt the trade off between the weight and additional strengh was worth it.

I'm not questioning your logic; belive me, I'm Mr. Overkill most times. I mean, when I re-revited the cross pieces back onto the aluminum stringers, I put a drop of 5200 in the hole, before putting the rivet in - just to keep any stray water from getting thru. (Yes, I'm nuts like that....)

Just wondering what the glass does besides add strength...

Thanks again
Rick

Rick it not only strengthens the floor but it ties all pieces together, totally seals out any water intrusion from the top side and protects the wood from abrasion and traffic. Glass covered wood is much tougher than epoxied wood by itself.

It would even be more important considering that you will use carpeting which will hold a ton of water next to the surface.

I would venture to say the a glass covering, for wood floors, is pretty universal in the boating world.

I used automotive upholstery contact cement, shot from a binks style paint gun, to glue the vinyl flooring on this glassed floor.

Boomyal, thanks for the reply... I'll go see my local supplier tomorrow afternoon and pick up that matting. Weather's calling for rain Thurs/Fri, so I either epoxy the floor, or rebuild the engine cover... Decisions, decisions...

That flooring on your boat is VERY nice. I take it that the floor is Nautolex's vinyl? I thought about using that, but I can only find it in a 72" width. I need 74". That stuff is darn near indestructable, as I had used it on one of my old cruisers.

Thanks again

Yeah Rick, it is Nautolex. The original lasted 30 years so I would have been foolish not to reuse it. You can see the original color inside the side pockets. I will eventually replace that too.

Fortunately I did not have to figure out how best to glue down a seam. That is always an issue to keep it from curling up at the seam. I tried to get through to the Mfg but could never find a link and none of the vendors ever knew much of anything about installation circumstances ie, especially seams.

You will be well served by using a layer of glass on your new floor. I used 10 oz cloth. There seems to be a debate as to whether you should use cloth or mat.

Wife saw the Nautolex, now wants it. Anybody need 4 yards of carpet?????

I have a supplier right here in town that I get the epoxy stuff from.

According to their website, they don't recommend mat for use with their epoxy products, as it's typically used with poly resin. Maybe something about the binder that's in it.

Not trying to steer business away from iboats, but if anybody wants to read up on different products and their uses, check out www.clarkcraft.com, under online store, then fiberglass.

Thanks again Boomyal..
Rick

Re: Marine Capet Glue over Epoxy Resin?

Wise Mrs. Rick. I finally got around to giving my boat a thorough cleaning from an October crab trip. I must have washed out a hand full of sand that had come up with the crab pots. That sand would never have come out of carpet.

Here is a link for the best price I was able to find on nautolex. Nautolex Flooring

I would do some homework on how to glue down the seams so they will not lift and curl. It will not be done with the normal contact cement that you use to hold the flooring down. Fortunately I did not have any seams and my edges, left unglued, were tucked up under the sidewall panels.

I do know that for vinyl flooring, in the home, they have a special two part glue that is used for a couple of inches along the seams. Maybe that would be suitable to use on this flooring material.

Thanks! That link does provide about the best price I've seen. Will place the order tonite! I did see that the recommended adhesive for this stuff cost more than the flooring! Gotta do it right, though..

Rick

Rick, STOP! Do not order their, or anyone elses adhesive. Go to your local auto interior shop and buy a gallon of their bulk contact cement. Take along a clean plastic jug, like a gallon apple juice jug. Should cost you about 15$ for the gallon.

If you don't have one, get one of these. SPRAY GUN Contact me for cleaning proceedures for the gun.

It is the easiest and neatest way to apply the glue. It is so easy you'll want to do more of it. Then just find some good 2 part vinyl flooring glue for any exposed edges or seams.

DO NOT ORDER ANY GLUE ONLINE!!!!! TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY.
