Im looking to replace the carpet in my bowrider. I've read that the stuff I can get at home depot (outdoor use) would be find and is very innexpensive. My buddy is swearing that I need to order marine carpet online. The second option seems like its gonna cost me a fortune. Can anyone give me some solid advice?

I've used that ribbed, corduroy-looking polypropylene nonwoven outdoor carpet from Home Depot on my front casting deck(8'X8') for several years and it holds up fine...maybe replace every 5 or 7 years...easy to wash and clean with a garden hose. I recall the 8'X8' section was about $50...Carpet has good wet traction and cooler under foot in the hot sun!

I put the home depot carpet in a boat a few years ago. Used it pretty hard for 2 seasons and it was still going strong. Got sick of the carpet and bought a CC this spring...

I have a piece of outdoor carpet cut to fit on top of my factory carpet. After a successful day catfishing, I lay the outdoor carpet on the driveway and hose it off. The factory carpet is as clean as the day I bought the boat.

I got a "remant" of that HD stuff back when we first got the houseboat in 2006-- 12' wide, 168' long, One of the guys there 'wanted it gone', I talked them down to $160 for it. That's 72 cents a yard...

It's carpeted the top of our houseboat 1-1/2 times (replaced the back half that's in the sun last year, after 6 seasons), one of the bathrooms and both porches of our mobile home, the pay booth at our harbor, part of the bunks on the Party Cruiser trailer, and I still have about 60' of it left.

here's a pic from last year, the cheap blue stuff, at 6 years old- yeah, it's in pretty bad shape in some places, but for the most part, I got my money's worth! (also in the pic is that maroon rug I speak about, it's 5 years old and not even "outdoor" stuff, yet it just keep working and looking fine!)

You get what you pay for. If you want your bowrider to look and feel like new, then get marine-grade carpet that will last longer. If it's not as big of a concern then just get outdoor carpet. As you can see above, it works just fine but isn't the same quality as marine-grade. It's kind of like asking us if you should buy sunglasses at Target or a pair of Costas. There is a difference but it really comes down to how much you care about looks, durability, and how you will treat said purchase.

Gee, I have always had good luck with indoor-outdoor carpet from Home Despot and Lowe's. Last time I checked, Lowe's had a placque of samples, of some real nice indoor-outdoor carpet. it was special order, but the price was good.
You will find that marine carpet from a marine store is a whole lot more expensive, and might (might) be a bit better.

That statement does not apply to marine-grade vinyl for cushions, though.

Where is rlamothe?

Depends on what you are looking for! I put some of that HD carpet an ol' boat with alot of "patina". The carpet looked like a tuxedo lying on the beach. After many months of beating the carpet up.....it finally fits in.

If she were mine.....Immaculate boat=Marine carpet. Otherwise I would go with HD.

Re: marine carpet vs home depot outdoor

Check with Lowes and HomeDepot as they might be able to order marine carpet, cheaper. My local Lowes has an obscure marine carpet swatch sample chained to the rolled carpet carousel (if you didn't know it was there, you'd overlook it).

My experience with HD and Lowes indoor-outdoor carpet is the same as BrianCinAZ, sunrotted in 3-4 years. Though...... my boat was in an ol'tub and replacing it every couple of years wasn't much of an ordeal, $50 and an afternoon. If the carpet was going into something that was complex, (red boat ^ above) I'd pop for "marine" carpet as it would be a HUGE pain in the arse re-doing it.
