I'm restoring my boat and when it came to replacing the carpet I was told that I HAD to replace it with marine carpet. Only problem is that it's pretty pricey. Can I use anything else that will last but might be a bit easier on the pocketbook?

Interesting and informative log of your "journey". Congratulations on being skilled in the the motor and hull rebuild. Could you give a description of how you glassed in the transom? Was fiberglass added to the outside of the transom? Thanks, eh.

You might look for indoor/outdoor carpet. Only thing you need to do is use outdoor carpet glue.

We have Lowes and Home Depot here they are big box store for hardware and such. There has to bed something similar there. You can also ask at the carpet storesd for outdoor carpet don't tell them it for the boat or, well, you know. :)

You know the old saying..."You get what you pay for".....if you don't want to spend the bucks to use actual marine carpet.....I didn't....then go to Home Depot and get the outdoor stuff. You are going to be limited to grey, green, maybe blue...or the old lawn turf green if you wanna go really cheap. You aren't going to find anything much cheaper than that here in Canada. If you try using some cheap indoor carpet plan on re-doing it in a year or so.

Re: Marine Carpet

Hi Clark, You don't "HAVE" to replace your carpet with carpet. When it was time to replace my carpet, I did alot of thinking, and decides to go with a marine anti-slip vinyl flooring. I thought carpet is carpet, wheather its in a house, or in a boat. And even if it is a marine carpet, it still will retain moisture, and have a chance to smell. The vinyl flooring I bought comes in alot of colors (myself, I bought a deep blue and black) its 73" wide, and is about 21.00 a yard. You put it down with a vinyl glue. Being one piece, without any seams, the water just rolls off to the back of the boat, and out the bilge. I wipe up any water that forms, and it drys in no time. Thats the way I would go if I were you. If you're interested, I can give you the website where I bought it from. Just e-mail me at lovemark89@aol.com Its really a great looking floor.

One other thing Clark, the beam on my boat is 5 1/2' thats 66". The Vinyl floor is 72" so with the extra I had, instead of cutting it just to fit the floor, I just went up the sides 3" on both sides, glued it really well, and now the deck is completely sealed from water.

Re: Marine Carpet

I went to a local carpet store. The man told me that marine carpet is the same as indoor/outdoor carpet. The difference in the store's marine carpet and the indoor/outdoor carpet was the backing. The price at the local carpet store for the marine carpet was cheaper that at boat stores.

I bought online finding the price was less than buying locally. You'll find that most vendors offer the same carpet from the same manufacturers.

Here's where I bought:

http://www.boatcarpetbuys.com/boatcarpets/765-25--x-8--roll-of-our-16oz-boat--carpet-.asp

Free shipping and I received it at my door two days after making payment. I could have bought the identical carpet at Lowes but the shipping time was 10 days and the cost was more than $30.oo more.

This was enough to recarpet my 18' Lund including a new rear casting deck and the insides of the hull above the floors.

Maybe this is helpful.
