yes u cant make hollow castings without holes in them.. the core plugs just fill up the holes.. and i have seen mercedes engines with solid threaded ones that actually screw in..<br /><br />protecting against freeze damage isnt what they are there for.. but no doubt some of em popping out have saved quite a few engines over the years..<br /><br />trog
No thin wall auto block is really going to stop ice from expanding at the expanding temperature range. You have to remove the water or mix it enough with anti-freeze. Only 2 ways known.

most of the factory blocks come with steel freeze plugs
which doesnt like salt
even whan they install brass freeze plugs the large one is steel
not exposed internaly to water and they rely on paint on the ex to protect
the cam bearing plug on the outside
the block may hold for years or days but even if it cracks and doesnt
enter block it will still present a possible cooling prob.
