Marine Retail Chain to close

I was in Boater's World here in MD this morning and the Manager and staff were making a big fuss about a "huge sale for the next 3 months". I thought nothing of it until the manager took a phone call and mention liquidation. Came home and found this article http://www.baltimoresun.com/business/bal-bz.ritz20mar20,0,7440065.story which in essence says the parent company has decided to shut em down.

I never thought their prices were great, especially compared to web distributors such as iboats, etc. But, it is a bit sad and further indication that this economy is not done smacking people around. Boating is a great hobby, and it's always a shame to hear about stores, builders, suppliers, etc going down for the count.

I was in Galveston recently and noticed the store there was closed down. I though it was a natural consequence of Hurricane Ike which devastated nearly all of the business there. But it sounds more like Ike was just a catalyst of things to eventually happen anyway.

sounds like a good time to get some deals,
lets just hope the deals are better than Circuit city's "sale"

It's usually hit/miss because companies hire liquidators. A liquidator's job is to get rid of inventory in whatever manner possible to the highest bidder. In CC's case, their liquidator setup contracts with buyers at X cents on the dollar, and the sale was merely a way of getting X+ cents on the dollar by duping the public into thinking they were getting "deals". Almost everything CC sold in their final days was still generating positive margin.

The manager said they were receiving signage today and the sale would go about 3 months, which time wise sounds familiar to CC.

Can't say I'm surprised. Figured it would happen when I learned of it a few weeks ago. Maybe I'll be able to luck into a deal. Heh.

As far as I'm concerned, marine prices in general are absolutely astronomical and for no good reason. Charging $250 for a plastic Bomar hatch or a single piece aluminum chartplotter bracket is just plain nuts in my view.

I wish Wal Mart would get into the boating supply business and get prices down to a reasonable level.
