Marine Sealer For Gear Case Mating Surfaces?

In swapping my gear case from a 73 Johnson 25 to a 74 same I noted some black tarry substance between gear case to exhaust housing mating surfaces. Is this a special marine type sealer I must purchase or is there an automotive type that works? ( I have enough of those) Also, in inspecting the impeller there did not seem to be any sealer between the impeller housing and the impeller plate-should i assume this is a dry junction? Thanks for any help, and must I go to a marine dealer to purchase this sealer or are they found in some big box stores?

Michael

No sealer required for either of the joints you mentioned.

As Walker states, no sealer is required. However, water will spray out of the area where the two units meet, and if this concerns you, coat the top surface of the lower unit with either Bombardier Adhesive (formerly OMC Adhesive), or Marprox Sealer 1000, or Boat Armor Sealer 1000.

All of the above three substances are identical.

Bombardier Adhesive M now comes in a red tube that says 3M Type 847.

yep. If you insist on using something, Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket available at NAPA will work.
