The float switch on my bilge pump has issues (another spring thing) and the bilge in my 'Ray consists of the engine hole only.
No choice. Even a modest rain puts the starter in the drink.
A car starter would be no good after the first dunking (brackish water).
By design or not, a marine starter can take repeated dunkings and keep on ticking.
I've replaced the starter twice in 20 years - both times due the solenoid.
