Marine stereo system-Amps and Subs

I just recently got a new Sony CDX-M30 am/fm radio with 4 clarion 6.5 in speakers.

I easily installed the speakers but I want to add a sub to the system.

The stereo says it has a built in amplifier already, but is that enough to power the sub?
I'm guessing it wouldn't.

New to this kind of stuff, so ask me what you need to know and I'll answer to the best of my ability.

Thanks

no the "built in amp" is only pushing maybe 20 watts RMS to the speakers.....its just enough to make it sound a little bit better than a stock stereo system but not by much. You really need to add an amp to push any type of sub woofer if you want to hear it at all.

FYI I have a Pioneer head unit pushing the 4 in cabin cerwin vega 6 1/2's then I have a 500watt 4ch. amp pushing the 2 pioneer 6 1/2's mounted on the radar arch just so I can hear the music clearly while underway. If you want to power a sub then you absolutely need an amplifier, at least a 2ch or mono block to gain any type of use out of said sub woofer. That's why there are pre amp out RCA connections on the back of aftermarket head units.

Agreed. Definitely need a dedicated amp for the sub. If its in your budget, get a decent amp that will drive the sub and speakers while you're at it (5+ Ch)
