I need to replace the fuel tank on our 1990 Sunbird Corsair. The place where the tank fits is very specific for shape and size. The well it sits into is molded in fiberglass and it really limits the size and shape of replacement tank choices. I've looked at a number of marine supply stores, and I'm having a very hard time finding a gas tank that will fit into the space. Its a small tank, maybe about 15-18 gallons, very flat tank. And the bottom of the tank: its flat down the middle but along the edges the tank slants up to meet the sides.
Here is a rough sketch of the shape of tank.
Are there any marine supply stores that have an extensive selection of tanks? The ones I do see with that shape are too big, too long. I find some that would fit that space, but the tank is too tall for the fittings. I did find an aluminum one, but it has fittings at both ends and the fittings all need to be on one end.
If we have to, we can have the main fitting going through a hole in the deck, as one end of the tank sits under the back seat, so we could rebuild the deck to accomodate the fittings to be above the level of the deck.
Please forgive any ignorance here, this is all new to me.
The old one is a plastic tank, but I will use an aluminum one if it fits.
I've looked on iboats, Star Marine, Discount Marine, and others and see many of the same tanks, but nothing like this.
Thanks for any help.
