Mariner 150 Question?

I lost power last week and just had a chance to investigage. The battery is staying around 12v instead of 14v. I started looking and found some melted platic material behind the coil plate. Both regulators look burned inside and they got so hot that it melted the coating. So, this explained why I didn't have tach a few months ago and probably why I lost power since it must have been running on low voltage from the battery.

I will have to replace both regs. My question is what caused both to burn. I'm assuming the stator somehow shorted and burned the regs. Is there a way to check it?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Mariner 150 Question?

digital volt OHM meter attached to leads to check to check proper output from the stator and trigger.
I have never done this,,my mechanic did to properly diagnos the problem I had with my 150 mariner.
I beleive the meters go for around $120.00
Good parts @ outboardignitions.com, have your serial # ready when looking up the parts,,much better warranties also.
best of luck

Re: Mariner 150 Question?

If they're the regs with the clear potting, just replace them. They were prone to burn down, and after one goes down, the other gets a full load and follows along in failure.

Replace them with the black potted ones with 6 wires, or with aftermarket (CDI) ones. If yer done boating anyway this year, look for em on eBay during the winter.

hope it helps
