I recently purchased a mariner 150 that upon mounting and start up I found that the 2 lower pistons were cooked and as i investigated more i also found a hole in what I would call the crankcase cover. My question is, is this motor worth rebuilding and does anyone have any parts? I pulled the heads and they are trashed on those 2 cylinders, and there are some fairly deep gouges in the cylinder wall on the lower left piston. I have never owned or worked on a mariner/mercury and would appreciate any info as to what year it might be as well. Also is it possible to repower to a 175 or even larger? I cant afford the cost of a new motor and the sellers response was it worked fine when I had it so I am looking for options. thanks

It's 1993....

Parts are still readily available... Without looking closer I think you'll find that the bottom carb has run out of fuel (therefore not getting oil to those cylinders) and that's what's kill those cylinders. Do you have the heads off yet?

I did take the heads off and those 2 cylinders were full of aluminum bb's. I assume the skirt on at least one of the pistons broke causing the hole in the crankcase cover. I later found the motor full of silt with a bad impeller

Poor water flow would kill the top 2 cylinders, not the bottom 2. Bottom carbs are the last to receive fuel from the pump... If it's weak (not unusual for people not to service it ) then the bottom carb could dry out.

I tried to edit my previous post, but my ISP crashed, 10 exchanges went down....

The hole in the block? Is it where a rod went though? If so.... Probably bye-bye engine.... If it was a dealer youbought from you MAY have some comeback... Private seller... maybe not... You'd have to prove he knew it was crook.

Yep, Oz. Always wanted to visit Alaska... I've been to Kamchatka, many times. I'm guessing, weather wise, it's pretty similar?

I was assuming it had been overheated. With my experience in yamaha outboards the lower pistons in those motors break/fracture because the exhaust ports all collect at that bottom piston, causing rapid overheating

I forgot to add that the skirt on the piston went through the cover, not the connecting rod.

ok... these engines aren't same as haha's.... The crankcase halves are matched and you can't buy it without a block...

Think thats gonna be a '93 2.0 "fat block" motor. May have a block that I won't ever use if you decide to rebuild. I can check ta see if its any good. But with tha price for all tha rest of tha stuff your going to need to replace you could probably buy a bigger (horsepower) drop on powerhead...........JMO
