Well I have almost got it running.I have a 86 mariner magnum that i have rebuilt and now it starts great an runs in the water but will not open up.When you throw the throttle open it shut off but will start right back up.I have set the time but not sure how to check the tigger stop. When you get it to take the throttle it runs great but will not turn over 5000 rpms.Do you need to have it in a water tank to check the tigger stop?

Not running faster than 5000RPM is a different problem, that may be handled later. You have set the idle pickup timing and max timing correctly? if so, the carbs may be dirty or misadjusted. Did you rebuild them?

If you set the idle timing, you can set the max timing. First determine if timing pointer is set properly. If not reset it. Remove spark plugs 2-6, ground their bases to the block and disconnect idle stabilizer(if you have one). Put timing light on #1 spark plug wire. Crank motor and advance throttle until timing shows Idle pick up spec. Now adjust idle timing set screw (just above pivot on throttle arm) to just start the carbs to open. Now advance throttle all the way and crank motor. use Max Spark advance set screw (top of throttle arm) to set max timing spec. Set WOT stop set screw (left of throttle arm on crankcase) as well as idle stop set screw (bottom of throttle arm)
