Are Mariner and Mercury engines pretty much the same (as with most Johnson/Evinrudes)? Are parts easy to get?

I'm looking at a '98 Mariner 175 EFI engine - anybody got anything bad to say about that particular engine?

Re: Mariner 175 ???

parts are pretty much interchangeable,,,and easy to get
do a compression test of course and drain the lower unit for water and or fragments prior to the purchase.
If you have digital ohm meter check the electrical sysytem specifically the stator and trigger.

If you can have a marine mechanic look at it,,prefereably a merc dealer it is worth the investment on this expense your about to purchase.

for example the stator for that motor is about $400.00
trigger about $200.00
also the flwheel magnets can become loose over time and/or in salt water use

good engines but have it checked out

motors may sound good in the drive way or shop,,,out there or underload is a different ball game.

if the seller will not permit any of this,,,,,,walk

I checked NADA, they list the Mariner engine at significantly less than the same Mercury engine. What's up with that, other than good marketing?
