Mariner 3.3 stalls after 5 minutes

Sounds like I've left the tank vent shut but I haven't. Engine stalls after about 5 minutes, restarts immediately and runs for 1 minute. If I leave it for a while will run for longer. Sounds like fuel starvation but the fuel is running into the carb OK. There's no inline filter to block. Cleaned out the carb. Float seems OK, needle valve seems to be working OK. The needle valve has a spring loaded pin at one end and a tapered bit at the other - I presume the tapered bit goes into the inlet pipe (having dropped it I can't remember which way it was)
So -- any ideas?

Had the same problem with a Merc 2.2.
Finally found small plastic trimmings in the gas tank. Actual pieces of plastic that were leftover from the manufacturing process. You could not see them in the tank, they blended in with the tank, all white plastic.
Some small shavings had also worked their way into the fuel line, enough restriction to stall the engine after a few minutes.
