mariner 60hp starter wont start

Hi, I have a problem with my starter motor. It will not start when I turn the key.
The solenoid clicks but starter wont do anything. But what I found was that
when I use a seperate cable and connect to the positive of the starter to the positive on the battery it works. I believe that the problem is the solenoid but Before I go out and spend money, I thought I could get some info from somebody that knows anything or has experienced this problem before.
The motor is Mariner 60hp Oil Injected mid 90's I think.

Easy, 12 volt tester, see if you're getting power to the solinoid. If you are , and the starter can be jumped as how you have tried and it works, then solinoid is shot. If no power to the solinoid then just trace the power source back and find out where the system is breaking down.

I dont have a 12 volt tester but I will get one asap, as I realise that it is a must if I am to test anything electrical on the boat. Please excuse my ignerence as I am very new to boating. how would I test the solenoid if it has power coming to it or not. Or do I just test where the cable that goes from the solenoid to the
starter motor.

You may have dirty cables also/only. Before you decide that the solenoid is the culprit, remove your connections, both + and - cables, both ends, between the battery and the engine, including the connections of the (large red wire) on the other side of the solenoid that goes to the starter.

Clean em up and reinstall them.........nice and brite and tight. This process is a good idea anyway and costs you nothing.....who knows you may solve your problem. When loosening the connections at the solenoid, use 2 wrenches to keep the nut adjacent to the solenoid from turning which should keep the threaded stud from turning.....if it turns, it can damage the wiring inside the solenoid and cause you a problem you didn't originally have.

Apparently there is a high resistance path between your starter and your battery. If it's not in the connections (and it only takes one crudded up or loose) then it is internal to the solenoid. It takes 100 -200 amps to start engines like ours and with only 12v available, any resistance can stop adequate current from getting to the starter.

Be sure and completely remove the connections on and to the cables and clean the parts that touch each other, don't just brush over them on the outside without removing the cables. Use a round battery brush on the battery terminals if you have the lead type connections; steel wool works great on the others. If corrosion is present clean it off too and you can get chemical washers at battery stores (red and green or red and black) that you put on the battery terminals before you reinstall the cable connectors that prevent it from forming. Be sure and install the red washer on +.

The final test before you buy the solenoid, if that looks like the problem, is to remove the large red wires from the high current terminals of it and short them together....expect sparks. If the starter spins up properly you have it nailed.

Be sure and get the right solenoid. Buying from a marine supply company (like on here if they have them) by engine make/model etc. helps to insure that. Don't expect to go to an autoparts store and get the right one. Just because solenoids look alike on the outside, they aren't necessarily wired the same internally. There are at least three types of control circuits in these solenoids and you need to get the one with the circuit that matches your engine's control circuitry.

You could spend $40 on it. Price varies significantly.

Yes I have looked it up here and they have the same Solenoid. Thanks again, that sounds like a very good way to test it.
I haven't checked but I hope they can ship it to Australia
