My 1985 mariner 75 outboard will start good and idle good when I first get to the lake. It will idle and then it will troll at 4,6,8 mph just fine. I can run it 5 min and fish or 25 min and fish. When I restart it to move to another spot I have to dead stick start it. At this point it won't idle good. If I return it to neutral after dead stick the idle is low and it will go dead. If I return it fast and the hit it hard into gear it will go dead. After I do this about 3 times and get it to jump out of the hole it will idle. And then do it all over again the next time I want to change spots. And then to load the boat is a turd! It will idle down and go dead before it hits the trailer.
I have changedthe plugs
Changed The rectifier
Changed the stator
Changed the fuel pump
Changed the water pump
Changed the fuel bulb
Changed the fuel line and have new clamps

Overall a good motor and it wants to run. Just has a bug keeping it from it. Help??

I'm just thinking out loud but it's not temp related if you can idle it good the first time for 25 min. The only difference between initial start up and second is a shutdown. I was thinking maybe your getting a flooding issue when warm? Like carb leaking fuel into the motor as it cools? Idk just spit balling

If I just ride in the boat it will eventually do this too like if I'm graphing spots and trolling the mariner.

So it might be temp related? Maybe running too rich? Do you absolutely have to choke it it start it?

Most of the time yes. Since I've put the stator on, it runs better but still having this issue.

Well, maybe you just need to open the low speed needles a 1/2 turn or so.---Tried that ?

No I haven't. I'm not the mechanic on scene. I can do some thing and I'm learning more but I'll see if my guy can help with that. I'll pitch that to him.

So.... We cleaned the carbs, adjusted the idle and all those a other arms there. But the main problem was when the fuel pump was changed the spring was missing that made the pump return to Normal position. Running good now.
