Hell all, My 2003 25hp el mariner in now 2 years old and it is due for its first impeller change.I have some limited experience of Mercury engines but this is the first time I have needed to work on a Mariner. I have a Mercury shop manual. My dealer assured me that the 25hp Mercury and Mariner are virtually the same motor.
My question are:-
1. I cannot find the shift rod coupler. The shift rod exits the top of the gearbox and disappears into the Swivel Bracket.
2. Does my motor actually have one?
3. Will the lower unit just drop when I remove the 4 bold from the lower unit?
Regards,
joyceboat

All the one's I have ever seen had a shift rod going down to the lower unit that had to be un-hooked before you could drop the LU all the way off.
If they have changed something, I do not know.

Oh yea, welcome aboard. You will find plenty of info here.

On the port side of the engine, near the front is a latch that holds the shift shaft in place with the mechanism. Unhook the latch to disconnect the shaft.

Don't lose the "reverse lock" washer that is on the shift shaft.

This info wouldn't pertain to a 1978 Mariner 80hp 4 cylinder would it? I just bought a water pump kit and was hoping dropping the lower unit would be easy like my 1972 Merc 115 6 cylinder.

Re: Mariner Impeller replacement

Hello all,
A big thank you to every one for their help. I have located the shift shaft retainer. It is behind the starter motor. To gain access to the retainer will mean the removal of the starter motor.
Regards,
Joyceboat
