Mariner motor serial number

I have reason to believe, I was sold a boat with a motor that is shown as a 1988 Mariner Model 40, but the serial number does not match. What is the serial number for that motor?

My boat is 1988 Bass Tracker Pro 17 that I bought from
Cabela's. They told me that the Model 40 Mariner was a Mercury motor. Now I cannot get it repaired because the shop I found does not work on Yamaha Motors. What gives? On close examination on the engine, I see it is made in Japan. Did I get taken and if so what is my recourse?
