Hello,
I just bought my first boat. I have taken boat out 3 times now. Everytime its been a pain boating. The boat is a 21' 79 Steury Cuddy Cabin with a 115 hp mariner outboard motor. A little History so far.
I have replaced fuel pump gaskets and diaphram, primer ball and fuel line from motor to tank, new spark plugs, 2 new batteries one marine cranking and one marine deep cycle with all electronics and lights hooked too. Checked cylinder compression. Compression is within limits. Checked ignition coil. checks out good. Replaced wires that were weathered and cracked. Checked for fuel leaks up to the carbs no leaks.
This is what is going on.
I can start engine with muffs or in test tank or in the water. When cold i can drop down off fast idle to neutral and will idle fine. Seems the motor runs a little rough but have nothing to compare to. When operating on muffs it will start, idle, will go in forward gear, reverse gear just fine. As soon as it is in test tank or in lake the motor will start idle is not so good. sometimes when cold i can put in gear and it will be fine. Then ill drive in wot and motor runs good nice a smooth lots of power as soon as i back off of wot and try to put it back into nuetral motor will stall. It will start back up in fast idle but then i fight to get the boat motor to go again. Have to put it in fast idle and drop down to nuetral and put in forward get real fast and if im lucky motor wont stall. but 90 % of the time it stalls. Ive tried to adjust idle mixture screws per manual but no difference. I have not pulled carbs yet. I have been a auto mechanic for dealerships but never had to work on carbs. I suck with anything to do with carbs. I have no knowlege on them.
I am getting frustrated with this motor and want to get it running like it should. So any help will be great.
