Much cheaper to do it yourself. More than half the cost. Parts won't be too expensive.

Re: Mariner Rebuild cost.

I can't even begin to estimate your costs but I am currently rebuilding a 78 402, 2 cylinder, 2 stroke, and I am into it for about $850. That price is 2 new pistons, rings, bearings, engine wiring harness, and machine work. I figure by the time its all said and done I will be into it for $1000. Yes you can buy one cheaper but I will know whats in this one and a new one is around 5K. I know that four strokes are more expensive to rebuild than two strokes. Good luck,

I had a thermostat lock closed in a '75 70 hp 3 cyl OMC. Required boring and new pistons and all. Had the powerhead done and I did the rest. $1000.

Re: Mariner Rebuild cost.

I just rebuilt a Johnson V-4 Crossflow. New Pistons (and rings), two cylinders honed, two machined, gaskets, carb kits, and sealant for about $650, time elapsed was 30 days.

I knew what the failure mode was, so I was able to reuse bearings, crank was great, and all electrical was fine. I did all the work myself except machining.

When I did my 120 hp Sport Jet boat a few years before, I let the machinist talk me into letting him assemble my engine. I also had a crank which had to be built up and reground. That one was closer to $2500 when I was done, time elapsed was 120 days.

iboats is great for parts, but I would phone them, the website seems incomplete. It also helps to have a NAPA Marine catalog because the part numbers are the same as iboat's.

Good luck!
