I have a 1979 Mariner 70 hp motor, Top cyl 0 compression. Bottom 2 115#'s I am probably lookin at a rebuild. Mechanic told me he would look at all cylinders-check carbs and water pump. How much would a normal re-build be. Your best guess would help plan a budget. Mark O

Re: Mariner Rebuild

A halfast repair will probably cost you $800?
A total rebuild of all cylinders, with new pistons and rings and all related parts, and carbs rebuilt--maybe $2000.
Then they may tell you the crank is shot, and on and on. $2500??

In other words, its pretty hard to tell what it will cost without knowing the extent of the damage, or if the mechanic is being thorough and honest.

Re: Mariner Rebuild

My son and I just rebuilt a 20hp inline 2 cyclinder yours is 3 cyclinder in line. Surely if we were able to do it so could you at a mere fraction of what the marina's and some mechanics want. Get yourself a merc manual and search for parts on internet as their prices can vary quite a bit and go for it, it isn't as one fellow put it, "rocket science!!!!!!

Re: Mariner Rebuild

I know that I generally get a flat $500 plus parts to rebuild any inline (3/4/6). You can figure that's only 10 hours of shop time, but I can usually be done in that, and the markup on the parts pays for the extra time to clean the carbs and time/tune the thing etc.

So roughly minimum is.......

Labor $500
#1 Piston $100 - $150
Rings all around $27
Rebore #1 .015 over $40
Gaskets and seals $50

On the upside if it's stuck rings you might not need a new #1 piston or overbore. On the downside if the exhaust plates are at all hosed you are looking at another $200 to deal with them.

And like the other feller said... this assumes all the other stuff is "OK" and we're just going in to "fix what's broke".

-W
