Mariner Trim Tilt Wiring

Just picked up a used "Working" tilt trim unit for my 1989 Mariner 150HP (post here before about the tilt/trim pump not taking my engine up fully to the tilt position due to the large center piston failure unless I help it up)

The unit I just bought is a 2 wire system. Dont have the boat with me right now but I am fairly certain that the current wiring ont he malfunctioning unit is a 3 wire system.

What must I do to convert it to work with the 2 wire pump? Someone did tell me about the use of a relay so I am just looking for confirmation and what the actual wiring setup would be

Thanks in advance

Re: Mariner Trim Tilt Wiring

Did you try and rebuild old tilt ram?It sounded like a minor problem to fix.Was also thinking it might of been bad o ring on manual valve which is a five minute fix.
Anyways to convert from 3 wire to 2 is possible but no picnic. You will need to go with relays.
Found this from RRIT:
On a side note, if a trim solenoid goes out then you may consider converting to trim relays. They do not make 3w motors anymore for this boat. You'll eventually end up replacing the solenoids with relays anyway in order to install a 2w trim motor. The cost of a complete wiring harness and solenoids is about $30. If you pull the black wire out of center hold in relay socket the it becomes a solenoid and your boat is wired for 3w trim. If you stick the black wire back into the center hole then your boat is magically transformed into 2w trim. And, yes, the standard relay socket has removeable terminals.

Yes I did replace o rings and also a new manual release plug (came with o ring kit) but the unit would still not lift the motor with the center piston unless I helped it up and when I did it would slowly creep down .... figured it was probably check valve but I found 3 units for sale at a boat yard .... 2 units work fine and one has a leak but the motor works perfectly int he leaking unit so i figured I could use it for parts. All 3 units are 2 wire and I got them for $200 total!

Thats a good buy.Rebuilt units are going for $500 - $600 each.I bought a complete unit while rebuilding mine for spares,I got lucky it was a 3 wire system.
Try and get a hold of RRIT.He may be able to help with conversion.

Re: Mariner Trim Tilt Wiring

Went to local marine store today and told them I had to go from a 3 wire system already in place to a 2 wired tilt trim unit and he had a used harness he gave me.... I put some photos of it below but a little confused on the wiring..... I know that the large red and black wires with the rings will go to the already existing solenoids on the engine and the 2 green and blue wires with the black tips on them will go to the 2 wires coming out of the tilt trim unit.... but what about the other set of the blue and green wires that the have clear looking connectors on them?

I belive they go to the tilt trim switch wires that should be on the old trim selinoids as you have to put low voltage to the relays inorder for them to work.
