mariner wiring question

Posted a thread last week about problems with my 1995 90 HP mariner power tilt up not working. Had a friend take a look at the unit, and he found the wiring that goes from the engine to the power tilt motor is corroded, and bare wire is exposed. The section that is corroded looks like it can be replaced as there is a connector fuse that seperates the corrorded section from the wiring in the engine which is still intact. Do i need any specific type of wire, or just the same guage..??

Re: mariner wiring question

The PTT wires will be connected to either two solenoids on the earlier motors, or two relays on the newer motors. You will need to cut the wire back to good wire, crimp and solder new wires with ring terminals or spade termianls to connect back to the solenoids or relays. You need to make the connection waterproof, so shrink tube and silicone caulk is one way to go.

Are you sure the PTT motor is still good?

THe power tilt down is still working fine every time, so i would hope to assume that means the motor is still working???

Re: mariner wiring question

Is that a two wire motor or a 3 wire PTT motor? If two wire motor, the motor is good and the up relay is likely bad. If three wire motor, I would recommend you put some power directly on the blue wire and see if the PTT motor runs the motor up. Id ti works, the problem is likely the up solenoid, wiring or switch.

Re: mariner wiring question

There are two wires going from the engine to the power tilt motor.
Last year i replaced the up relay and the power tilt up worked for a while, but im wondering with those wires that were corroded if it shorted it out again?

Re: mariner wiring question

Maybe the +12VDC wire or the wire that powers the Up relay is broken/corroded? You know the ground wire to the Up relay is good.
