Re: Marinize GM 305

I'll swim against the grain here:

JUST BUY THE DANG $355 5.0 REMAN SHORT BLOCK!!! Looks like they offer 30 day warranty on marine engines, and it sounds like you pretty much have your mind made up anyway. And everyone here acknowledges the price is lower than you'll ever see again in your lifetime...

And at that price, what the heck do you have to lose? Sounds like you don't mind doing the labor yourself and you have the other parts you need to make it work. Sell all your leftover parts when you're done, and you will have fixed your currently non-running boat POSSIBLY FOR A PROFIT! How often does THAT happen?!?!

If it grenades in the first few weeks, you've got a 30 day warranty. If it grenades after that, you can take your small profit and start over with a different motor and do it again! And if it runs perfect for the next 10 years you're GOLDEN.

High risk, high reward.

Re: Marinize GM 305

That is correct.

If you use your old cam, just be sure to keep the lifters matched up with the cam - in other words, make sure each individual lifter goes back onto the same exact cam lobe.

Do yourself a favor and simply buy a Fel Pro gasket set. You can confirm with the company, but I am pretty sure that all of their head gaskets use composite material and stainless steel. Perfectly fine for a marine environment.

Are you saying just buy a standard auto Fel Pro gasket set? Or to buy a Fel Pro marine gasket set? Regardless I cannot find a complete overhaul gasket set for this motor, only find em for 87 and under 305s...

and Bomar I found this post of yours while reading up on this subject...
Again, as another budget concious measure, find a block that has the maechaical fuel pump boss fully macined (you have to look inside to make sure. That will save you the expense of a marine electric fuel pump, wiring in an oil pressure switch, and probably a fuel pressure regulator, in additon to the need to fabricate new hard fuel lines.

Is this something that should concern me as well?

If you currently have a mechanical pump , yes.

...and just buy a standard FelPro gasket set. There are plenty of places that sell overhaul gasket sets.

My 1999 Volvo 5.0L is equipped with an electric fuel pump...

So I can only assume yours is also.

So a quick look at your own motor will answer for sure whether or not you need mechanical fuel pump hookup on the replacement block.

That kit on summit shows 87-95, do you happen to know the number for the 96-00 kit?

Re: Marinize GM 305

I just built a 350 for my boat. I bought a block for $40.00 off Cl. Had it honed, cleaned & tested for cracks. I bought a complete engine kit from northern auto on line (cam, pistons, bearings, rings, gaskets, oil pump, lifters and core plugs) for $250.00. I put my heads and all the other parts from my old motor including rods and it runs like a champ. Im into it about $430.00. I suspect to have some problems with the heads at some point, but this was a pretty cheap fix for me, I don't use this boat much.
