mark 20h magneto lever. Chinewalker, help!

Hello:<br /><br />I'm cleaning up a 1956 Mark 20H motor and have a few questions. This isn't like the other old kickers I mess with so I'm a real newbie here. Chinewalker, I remember you having experience with these motors, so feel free to give yer $0.02 worth.<br /><br />I cannot budge the magneto control lever unless I loosen the vertical shaft mounting screws (which pulls the gears away from eachother). Is this the normal way to adjust the magneto lever or is something wrong with the gears?<br /><br />Also, can anyone tell me how the throttle cable attaches to this motor?<br /><br />Thanks in advance.

tsutter, the mag plate on most of the 20Hs are fixtured at max spark, original they would retard the spark to start the engines but to many times in the excitement they wouldn't get put back in the right position an it would lose you the race so most are held in one place. Are you planing on raceing it in Canada or just Fooling with it -- Bob <br />Sorry I missed the cable part, Have you the full cowl or not they fasten differtly

Thanks Laddies:<br /><br />I wondered. The lever was just kind of haphazardly backwards and I wondered how the *&$@ would that happen.<br /><br />I'm just messing with it right now. I got this motor last year from a colleague. I mentioned that I was looking for old outboards and he said he thought he might have one for me. He didn't know anything about old kickers so I went to have a look. There sat a hydroplane and the motor. Said he hasn't started it in 30 years (the boat registration sticker confirmed this). So I got the boat and motor for a pittance. I plan on selling them eventually, just monkeying with the motor cause I've never seen one before.<br /><br />I wondered about the cable. When I bought the motor the starboard cowl cover was missing. I purchased one off of ebay and it looks like it would fit, but there is no hole for the magneto lever. If this cover isn't from a MK20H (as advertised by the seller), me thinks I might have gotten taken on good ole ebay...<br /><br />Thanks for the reply.

Hi TSutter,<br /> All 20H covers have a narrow slit in the starboard cowl to allow the advance lever to slide through. It is actually different from a regular Mark 20 cowling, as the regular one has a wider slit. It is not uncommon for folks on eBay to play the "racing motor" card on pretty much anything old and green. There are many Mark 20H-specific parts out there that look similar to, but are not the same as, regular Mark 20 parts.<br /> There is often a shim under the base of the mag advance lever. It's usually a thin layer of brass shim stock cut to shape of the boss with two holes in it for the mounting bolts. The advance stop is bolted to the center stud on the crankcase. For general running around, the advance lever will be a nice thing to have, as having the mag at full advance is an arm breaker.<br /> The cable mounts on the port side cowling through a boss that is through bolted to the cowling. I made a cable mount out of a brass pipe fitting, tapped on one side for a set screw to hold the outer sheath of the bowden wire. The inner wire attaches to the swivel post on top of the carb. Does your motor have the Carter Model N2150S or the Tillotson KA7A?<br /><br />- Scott
