I have been working on getting my boat to shine again.

The upper hull was more oxidized ,then I thought.

I was getting no where fast with 400 grit wet/dry paper.

Then I remembered your post about comet, and a 3-m scratch pad.

This is where the thank you !! comes in.

I'm half way done with the comet/ pad step .

And I'm amazed at how easy it is and the results are hard to believe.

This is on a 1978 procraft bassboat , that was left in the sun!!!

MY dishpan hands won't be as bad after all.

You are welcome!!! Glad to hear its working for you. I think this method works better on old gelcoat that has the powdery finish than just mildly faded gelcoat.


Did you get to polishing yet or still cleaning off the old layer of dead gelcoat?

I've removed all the old gelcoat/ oxidation.
Im in the process of polishing, my buffer died, waiting for one from a friend.

Sorry if I'm highjacking this, I don't mean to. I have an ok shine, but get powder on my finger if I run it across the hull. Do I need the comet treatment or just the polish?

Im not the expert , but I wouldn't polish it with the chaulkey stuff coming off.

You might try some , light rubbing compound , instead .

The comet does a great job, but I think Mark said to do it on bad oxidation .

Mine didn't even remember what shine was.

It doesn't sound like your that bad off yet.

Maybe Mark will get in here and give you some better ideas.
