Re: Mark 58?

well that motor u say 45hp so they say that u should go at least 70% of the max rated hp rating so u would get acceptable perfromance. boat rated to 65 45hp motor so thats 69.9 somehting% so i would it should be fine now if u plan r carrying a lot of people maybe go more but that should be fine

Re: Mark 58?

Well,he gave me an offer i couldn't refuse!A Starcraft glass boat(soft transom)sitting on an old skool Holsclaw trailer with the Mark 58 electric start for $100-!I hope to find a home for the boat(anybody in the CT area???).The motor is suposed to have low hours on an overhaul. It needs paint,i hope to run it tomorrow. It's only been 2-3 years since it ran. Here's a couple pics.

Re: Mark 58?

u have any mechanical ability

alright well ur a very lucky man and also lucky that i just finished up my mercury 500 which is almost exactly the same as ur mark 58 looks the same except mine is 50hp urs 45hp well first off

check compression see if the motor is good at all. then put oil in the spark plugs rotate the engine a litlle install plugs and let sit.
then check spark either pull the plug out and ground it against the block and turn the engine over or get a spark tester and turn engine over
if compression checks out good then throw a water impeller in the motor.
before u do that might as well the gear oil put new gasket in screws 85-95 weight gear oil

if spark weak or no spark then serviceing the magneto is the next step do the four things above first then we move to the next part. this is the easiest way to do things and any questions just ask im like an expert on this model since its like the same as mine and i just finished overhauling mine since it hasnt ran in over 20 years but now it runs great:eek::D
