There is probably an official way to do this but what I did is spray paint one two or three ,1/2 inch stripes on the line. Red for 10,20,and 30', Orange for 40,50 and 60', Blue for 70,80 and 90' and green for 100,110 and 120'. Works for me. I often anchor in about ten feet of water and now I know to go to the first blue strip.

I use black and red Sharpies. Color a ring around the rope. Black at 10' intervals and red at 50'. A mark that is two reds and one black is 110'. If you don't count the chain as part of the length you get some extra margin in the scope.

I've heard some people use colored cable ties. But IMO these can break off after a while in the sun.
