Phlip , I checked the major stores in my area (Massachusetts) / central N.E. Of those only one has potted herbs - Super Stop and Shop . There were Two that carry the paste herb , same brand and display at each . They are Hannaford's and Super Shaw's . I've picked up a couple tubes to try this weekend . Pic's included . peter

Re: Market research on herbs in Nth America.

Phil, I do all the shopping and cooking here.
I have not seen any herb pastes (except basil which is marketed as Step 1 for the large populatyion of Pesto fans, and ginger, and mint~indirectly as sauce). I don't call garlic a herb.
I do buy minced garlic & ginger, and minced basil routinely because i use them a lot. there are many other herbs that I use comparatively infrequently and buy fresh, dry the leftovers, and store in the freezer.

As a reasonably picky and educated consumer, I'd certainly consider any herb that was available in paste form, but I grow a number of herbs myself and after the season, i dry what I have left and keep them in the freezer.
This slows the loss of VOCs to a minimum, unlike store-stored dried herbs.

I have some 2-year old basil in the freezer that I use 1/4 of the recipe-specified fresh product because it is so potent/concentrated.

Re: Market research on herbs in Nth America.

Sorry for not getting back to this.
Great info here....thanks.......

I have an Audit on my QA program this Friday, so I am up to by butt in Crocs at the moment......and i had a shipment rejected, as the Quality Control Inspector didn't like the info on the carton label the Purchasing Exec had instructed me to put on. Bustaaaaaard!!
I will be back when I have got over the audit and cooled down over the reject.
Cheers

Back again.

Greg Holmes.
Would really appreciate it if you could get a picture of the product in your shop.

Tom Mays.
If you do see tubes etc, I would appreciate a picture if possible.

Spots:
Thanks Daryl. That site was very helpful info.
I will stew on that one for a while until I can plan another move.
Do we use pastes....of course not.....Anita saw that and immediately bought a pack of 4 pastes, but left them in the fridge.....so tonight we are definitely going to try one!! (Isn't it the way).

Salty.
Yes, fresh is best, plus growing your own is a special "gardening thing" too.
If you ever want some ideas of different 'ones' to grow, just let me know.
Your 2nd post.....thank you for the Amore brand.
Have looked it up and can't find the parent company site, but the retailers show some great lines. Very Good info. Thank you.

QC.
If your wife has seen them, then maybe she could take a photo on the phone or something. If it's not too much trouble.

Dave 4151.
Yep, excellant site. I looked at that line...very easy to pack....bit of plant and equipment, but the gas gives an extended shelf life, the hard packaging means you can stack flat to top of box and nothing gets squashed, and they can be 'hang-sell' (as in the package has a hole in top and it fits over a bar and hangs down).....shops love it.....mass # of stock for min space. PROBLEM....our market won't pay the price....not the customer, but the retailer.....the 2 big chains eye each other up and on certain lines keep price to a min, and herbs are one of them.
Just a fact of our system at the moment.
I copied the artwork tho.....always good to have a library of artwork for ideas.

NW Redneck.
Don't forget....I will be waiting for pictures of what you find.
That other stuff.....you just wouldn't believe how easy it is to grow that stuff in my system.....we reckon we could hold about 30,000 plants (Dutch Hope is it??) at different stages of development, on a 52 week grow period and XX week cycles.

Peter.
Your photos are brilliant.
The product is named same as the line sold here.
You have to watch the B/S in this world.....maybe I am wrong....maybe not.
This manufacturer down here advertises they grow, process and pack (just up the road from me) and state 'patent pending'....and there is a fair amount of hype, but that's ok....we all believe in ourselves and that's good....but this has been on their literature for a long time...years.....now all of a sudden you produce a photo of an identical product....name, artwork etc identical, but in oz and not grams.
I mean I don't care.....competition is fine.....it is the way life is....but it is valuable info for my future....like I know it works because my opposition is doing it....and they reckon they are not. How lucky can I get with those photos??

Now for Roscoe.
You are dead right, it is beyond me.
To set up a structure to turn raw product into a finished line is a big op, but if i tie in with an existing structure, but have them use my own package, and as i hold a distribution and supply number, a Aussie QA program with full HACCAP (food saftey) with a national chain.....it could work.
No point in re-inventing the wheel. ....it is already turning.

So thank you everybody for your input, and I will look forward to any other info that you can supply. Your market is so broad, you may well have 10 different similar or identical lines, and knowing about them is important to me.
I will make a file of all this and start stage 2 of my thinking.

Once again, I really appreciate everyones input.....I can't mention you all, but every comment was valuable to me

Cheers

Same stuff as Peter's Pics Phil . . . and she also Picked a Pack of Pickled Peppers . . . :D

It turns out that we had the Lemon Grass tube in the fridge  Notes on the back:

Manufactured By:
Botanical Food Co PTY Ltd
86 Palmwoods-Montville Rd
Palmwoods, Queensland 4555

www.gourmetgarden.com

And then:
Patent Protected i.e. not "Pending"

So I guess we are importing it already . . .

Phil; the Oregano stuff I used is the same as the pics in Pete's post. The chilli one was a different brand but I haven't found out what yet.

Re: Market research on herbs in Nth America.

I don't know what to do.
Have completed my research and.....well, just procrastinating.
I have to consider other options....do I continue looking for other avenues in the horticultural field, or make a slight change to something else.........
Anyway, I have tucked away my 'results' and will think about it.
Cheers
