My dads coworker is in the market for a "beer boat" so to speak, for his large Sea Ray. He wants either a Boston Whaler 18' - 22' or a Bayliner 185. Both w/ trailers. He has asked me to find the market value of either of these. The whaler has to be CC and the bilgewhiner has to be a model year 2000 or newer.

Whalers are Zippo lighters as Bayliners are to Bic's

the two boats don't compare. the whaler is a far better boat.
nada blue book:
2000 whaler 18' Br/DL Hull only, $9770 to 11,120

2000 Bayliner 1850 DXBR(CS) with 135 hp engine $7440 to 8450

see they don't compare.

He is not trying to compare them. He wants either one. he just wants to know a reasonable price for either. personally I am not sure why he wants the bilgewhiner, but he does.
He wants to buy them used. He just wants to know what many are selling for around here.

Just tell him that Bilgeliners tend to run about 1/2 the cost of a Real Boat,....err Whaler...........

And,......
The day he decides he doesn't want it anymore,.......
He could Sell the Whaler,..... Or Junk the Bilgeliner.......d:)

Wow!!:%

I am really curious what priorities caused him to select those two boats. Like a Yugo and a Mercedes!

If you go back 20 or 30 years you can find nice BW Outrage 18s, 19s or 20s for $10 to $12 grand. I doubt that you would find any seaworthy B'liners that old.

On the other hand, BW Montauk 17s, Nausets and Eastports from that period can be found in like new condition for under $10 Grand.

The big difference is that B'liners border on being disposable boats and Boston Whalers are likely to last 50 years or more.

According to him, the bayliner 185 was only made since 2000.

Actually a bayliner 185 is listed. Just in 2001 instead of 2000. He wants to know what a good deal for one of those is and I am not sure how NADA determines there prices.

Value Explanations
Low Retail Value — A low retail valued boat will show excessive wear and tear either cosmetically and/or mechanically. This boat may or may not be in running order. The buyer can expect to invest in cosmetic and/or mechanical work. Low retail vessels usually are not found on a dealer's lot. Low Retail should not be considered a trade-in value.

Average Retail Value — An average retail valued boat should be in good condition with no visible damage or defects. This boat will show moderate wear and tear and will be in sound running condition. The buyer may need to invest in either minor cosmetic or mechanical work.

Note: Vessels in exceptional condition can be worth a significantly higher value than the Average Retail Price shown.

Nada guide is exactly that.... just a guide. Depending on the season, supply and demand the prices will fluctuate greatly.

If he wants "value" go with the Whaler (not a look a like) hands down. They tend to hold resale value. This way if he get "bored" with it in a few years he can re-coup his investment. Whalers depreciate at a snail pace while other boats tend to depreciate RAPIDLY!

I learned a minute ago that the reason he wants the pricing info on those two boats is he wants to see the cheapest option (bilgewhiner) and the most expensive offer (whaler) and possibly split in the middle. My job was just to find the market value of the two.
