my gf usually just handles the dock lines, sometimes onehanded as she has bought n icecream cone whilst i ready the boat (rolls eyes) the real shock of her abilities was with the old boat (no reverse or neutral)...after launching, i park car n trailer...upon returning i see the boat on the other side of the dock "bow out" still licking her icecream...sometimes i think she is SELECTIVELY clever hmmmm. why didnt i think of that?:O i usually just shoved away and started the old n busted pig as we drift away frm the dock lol

bought n icecream

This may be the single best idea ever created for marriage and boat ramps.

Matter-of-fact, I'll be buying two ice-cream cones on the way to the ramp. One for me and one for her. How could she possibly
get into trouble holding two ice-cream cones!!!! BRILLIANT!

Wait a minute, this could work on children too! Who'd a thunk two ice-cream cones could paralyze better than a tranquilizer gun??

I say "woman, I'll be in the boat. Launch it, and bring me a sammich! And a Cocktail!"

When I pick myself up off the ramp, I back the trailer to the water, and get in the boat. She backs it the rest of the way in, and parks the truck, and I pick her up at the dock, then offer her a cocktail and a snack.

Re: Marriage advice: Who does what at the boat ramp

Never had a wife while owning a boat but now it's the boat of a jet ski we got. She was intimidated most of the season but now she's feeling more comfortable. Our recent launch she gets on the jet ski, I drop the rear in till the intake and she fires it up - unhook. Back in and dump her in the water. She circles around avoiding other people till i'm ready to go and then we go enjoy our day.

While camping we launched, she got confused with the reverse and swung the rear of the jet ski under the dock. Put some scratches in the paint. All I could say was "Oh well, s'it happens". She was more mad at herself then I was and that made her mad at me.

My wife holds the boat and keeps the little girl safe while I do everything else. She helps unload the boat after we have left the launch.
Works good so far!

Routine, routine. It's all about the routine.

We broke ours yesterday and actually went to a real ramp. With parking, concrete and a dock!

Coming back in we arrived at the dock and she was getting out to hold the boat and as she stepped up to the pier the boat moved away and then her knee gave out. Down she went. The trooper she is she never said a word until we arrived home and showed me how much her knee had swollen up.

Dang docks. We never have that problem when we beach it at our primative ramp! BTW once the trailer is in the water she's as fast at loading as I am.

Re: Marriage advice: Who does what at the boat ramp

My wife knew more about launching after explaining it to her once then most men know about it after yrs and yrs of boating.
We always load the boat in the staging area, remove tie downs, unplug trailer lights, and make sure it's ready to launch. She walks down to the side of the dock we are going to launch to, and waits for me to back down..

Then, I push the boat off by hand and she takes the bow and stern ropes, and pulls the boat as far as she can to the back of the dock. To be out of the next boat wanting to launch, while I park the trailer. Just the reverse when coming back in.. She waits with the boat and moves it forward until we are next to pull out of the water, while I go get the trailer. It's like clock work and I only had to explain it to her one time 11 yrs ago.

Ingress...
Usually when I first pull in to the "staging" area...away from the launch itself...we jump out and "prep" it. We unsecure the transom straps, drive clips and safety chain. I look for my "Remove before flight" flag attatched to the plug, remove it and secure it right under the throttle so it's easy to see. I reach in and turn on the blower. We then proceed to the ramp where they...or she...gets out and grabs the bow line, unhooks the strap and I back down...splash. We switch spots, she parks, I lower the drive and start the engine.

Egress...
I shut down, get out and get the truck. She "tidys" up a bit...put lifejackets and anything else that may fly out away. I back down the ramp, set the brake, get out...she gets in, I pull the boat up, clip it, winch it to the stop and secure the safety chain. She drives it straight out away from traffic. I pull the plug(usually there's little to no water) and re-attatch the flag. We hook up the transom straps, clips, make one final "walk around" to ensure lights are good, strap is taut, "things" don't fly out etc...and off we go.

Our "home" ramp is usually not too busy except at "primetime" on weekends so it's not too rushed. I'm guessing from backing down to pulling back up is about 2 min. Most of the "work" is done AWAY from the actual docking area. Even if I need to drive out of the landing area I will if it's busy, so I'm not "that guy" who is doing "prep" work ON the ramp itself.

Nothing more annoying than someone digging for lines/unhooking straps etc... while they're parked ON the ramp:mad:

Re: Marriage advice: Who does what at the boat ramp

Mine just holds the launch rope and makes sure it doesn't get away, I get everything else.

We were out this summer and I back it in and pull the truck into a spot, as I got out of the truck I see my wife holding a slack rope with a very funny look on here face, then I noticed my boat floating out into the lake.

Apparently I didn't get the launch rope on the eye quite right and the boat slid in and kept going, luckily there was another boater there that grabbed it and pushed to shore for me so no harm no foul but it was funny seeing the look on her face.

I have to use busy ramps most of the time. I back it down they hold on to it while I park. Wife is too nervous to back it down or park the rig. I just tie up people have to wait until I can get back and drive off.

Re: Marriage advice: Who does what at the boat ramp

My wife is on the ball everytime we go out. I start my prep at home by removing cover, get the built in cooler filled with suds and ice, I pull up to the ramp. We both get out, fire in our back packs and towels, I undo rear tie downs, and install drain plugs while she gets in boat, turns on blower, organizes gear and gets lines attached to front and rear cleats and attach bumpers. By the time she is done that I am in the truck ready to back her down. Wife holds the line while making her way on the dock. All this is done within 5 minutes and the 5 year old in the truck. Makes things much smoother with a good first mate .

My wife would definitely not do good holding the rope...she may be able to pull the empty trailer forward to a spot. Sending her for icecream would be good if they sold it by the ramp

If your wife isn't eager to help and isn't really interested in learning, you should send her to the dock to watch the boat while you park or get the truck.

I always launch and retrieve alone not matter who is with me... my wife, or fishin' buddies. This way if anything goes wrong or happens I have no one to blame it on except myself. No sense in getting mad or into a fight with family or friends over something that's supposed to be fun.

When you put them in charge of watching the boat when you're not there they feel like they're actually doing something important and feel like they're helping.

X2!

On busy weekends when I happen to be at the docks, it never fails, husband/wife screeming bloody murder at each other (often while the youngens are watching and learning). Bummer.

I'm with grub, I'll handle the operation and logistics, my bride can hang out and just enjoy the day;)

If she has fun, she may actually go out with me again:D

that's what I was referring to in my earlier post about being selfish. Put her to work if she is physically able to drive.
