The good, the bad, and the ugly part of the story--

At that time, reeds were relatively new and still being perfected. Reed breakage was common on some brands. The poppets worked very well with nearly zero airflow resistance. They also sometimes set motors afire when it would lean-sneeze through the open valve....especially if there was leaking gas, another Martin feature.

Interesting additional info!

Where did the gas leak from? I will be sure to take a look at things to make sure we don't have any leaks.

By the way, I got confirmation that the parts are on the way, so I hope to get work done on it this weekend.

The gas cap was notorious for leaking. So was the gas tank on certain models. Russ Larson has new gas cap seals.

He (Russ Larson) also set me straight on the lower unit. I didn't realize that it is filled with grease, not 90 weight oil. He reccommended John Deere Corn Head Grease from a tractor supply place.

Well, I got the grease the other day and am working on it this morning. When I pulled the lower unit screws I found that someone had filled it with Hypoid 90W lube. It is draining now, very slowly.

Is it ok after it drains a while to add the grease? Or do I need to tear it all apart and get all the old gear oil out? Maybe I can just flush it by pumping lots of grease in the bottom and out the top?

Let the hypoid drain for literally 24 hours...let gravity go to work. Then fill with the grease.

Well, it seems that 3 months have passed since I made any real progress on the Martin. They don't make a zirc fitting with the threads of the fill hole, so I ended up taking an older squeeze bottle I had from chalk line refill and cleaned it out real good and filled the bottle with grease. It has a nice narrow tip on it and I was able to fill up the lower unit without any issues. My dad and I put it in a test tank over the weekend, and it ran GREAT!! I hope to get it on a boat this weekend and do the final carb tuning. Man, that thing is quiet and smooth!

Just an update on the old Martin. When it runs, it runs very smooth and quiet. The problem is we can't seem to get the carb adjusted, and then it is really hard to restart. After thinking about it, I think we have a sinking float which floods it.

At some point soon I will pull apart the carb again and check out the float. It may also be something else in the carb from junk in the gas tank. We should have cleaned it out better.

We will clean the tank, re-clean the carb, and re-seal the float. It should run better after that.
