Matching LU

How can I tell if a given lower unit will work with my motor? I have a 1964 Evinrude 65 HP that reverse doesn't work. I see lower units on Craigslist all the time but don't know if they'll work or not. It seems it'd be cheaper to buy an entire LU that's in good shape than it would be to fix the one I have.

Try boats.net......they have parts info online....and if you spend the time, you can probably determine compatability by part numbers from the parts programs they access you to.....

I tried. They don't seem to have information prior to 1970. I'm running old school.

If yours is mechanical shift and not electric any 1960-67 unit will work from the V-4 line (50-75hp)
