Mating the lower and upper Pre Alpha halves. Seem to get the shift collar on the shift shaft then can't get the drive shaft splines to line up. Once I get the lower unit locked in forward, the advice from other posts in the archive is to put light counter-clockwise pressure on the prop to get splines to line up on driveshaft. Nothing moving when trying that. Removed the lower unit and tried. In forward, Prop locks C-CW, free clockwise. In reverse, prop locks CW, free C-CW. Neutral, prop free both CW and C-CW. Still the driveshaft in the lower unit will not move in either direction.

What's happening?

Thanks for your input

Swabbie

Swabbie,It only takes a small nudge on the prop shaft (clockwise) and you are no longer in forward, and turning the prop counter-clockwise won't work anymore.Does this help?

DHP

No it didn't, unfortunately, DHP. Tried four times without touching the prop. I don't understand why in neutral I can't turn the driveshaft. I had to turn it when I put in the new impeller, why won't it turn now?

Swabbie

It does take a bit (not by fingers alone) to turn the prop to get the driveshaft moving.

1. Put the control box into forward position.
2. Engage the drive into forward position, the turn prop ccw procedure while rotating the shift shaft.
3. Push the drive into the upper unit, if you are lucky, it goes in. Mostly not.
4. Check the shiftshaft splines lines ip with the upper shaft.
5. While pushing the drive against the upper unit, roate the prop ccw to thrun the driveshaft to line it with the upper unit. It should drop in. Don't forget to line up the water pump outlet and the upper water tube.

Hope this helps.
