Max Horse Power for 228 Stern Drive.

I have a concern that I thought was addressed months ago. The 1979 Tri-Sonic 1900DV Ventura has a 305 GM, 228 Merc, Horse power engine. The Stern drive is 1 228. The 305 is locked up and would require a complete overhaul to get it running. I was given a 350 GM, small block that is ready to go. Last night a question was proposed. Can the stern drive handle the increase horse power. If so what is the max it can handle. Also, should I have any concerns having a pre-1987 305 GM and replacing it with a post-350 GM. I was told GM change the rear main seal and bolt patterns in 1987. I think I found a manual for the 228 stern drive, but as for the engine I am still at a loss. I hope I have explained everything correctly, I am not a mechanic. Thanks for your help.
