I'm looking at a 1986 Bayliner Capri 17', currently has 70hp O/B. Not too sure if I'm going to use it. What I need to know is, What is the largest O/B that this boat will hold? With any luck I'll own it on Thursday. Any comments welcome, Tanx, Maxxie

I'm not going to speculate on what the Max HP rating of the boat is, but you will need to know that. That will tell you the max HP you can safely and wisely use.

The answer is as simple as looking at the capacity plate in the boat. It clearly states maximum HP.

Also there is no listing for a 17 footer in the Capri series for 1986.
They made a 16 and 18 ft.
The 16 was rated at 85 HP.....so,my guess would be no more than a 90 HP..

Bayliners of that era are "lead in" boats and have significantly less capacity than a lot of the other makes. 85hp max I believe is the correct answer. Other makes have more capacity. Our Doral 164 has a 140hp max rating.

I'm finding a lot of 1980'ish Bayliner Capri 17' add's on ebay. They must have made them. Also I stopped to look at one that was in someones yard 17' or 18' Capri & it had a 125 HP Force O/B. It did look to be way too big for the boat.

And you probably don't want a Force outboard. They haven't been made in years and parts/service are getting harder to find.

I don't want a Force motor. I was just stating that I saw a similar boat with a 125 hp motor. I had it looked at by a "boat guy" & he seem's to think it looked ok. I know many of you guy's here don't like Bayliner boats, & I don't really want a Bayliner, but with my budget that's what I going to have to look at. The way things are going in the auction, it's not going to happen anyway. I was trying to steal it under the radar for $200 with the trailer, it was a donation boat. I'll keep looking & check here for comments, that why I'm here to get comments- good & bad, because you guy's know your stuff. Thanks, Maxxie

If you buy a boat like that for $200 especially at an auction, consider it a down payment on a $5,000 boat--one that you can't use until you make all the payments.

You want to get on the water cheap? Think aluminum hull.....

Truth be known...... WE LIKE BAYLINER BOATS. We are also aware that the older ones were prone to construction/rot problems. The new Bayliner's are good quality. Take a few minutes and read the reviews by our member's of the new Bayliner's :) Read here http://forums.iboats.com/Bayliner_Boats

Now an older boat for that little money "might" have issues.....

Re: Max HP O/B on 17'?

I know what everyone is telling me here & their just trying to steer me clear of making a costly mistake. I'm in a tough spot with the $$$ thing. I know what home cookin' means. I'm quite sure I'm not going to buy this boat, but if I do, I don't mind fixing it up a little at a time. I just want to get started on something right now. The biggest shocker is the price of new & used out board motors, WOW!! I'll post up in a few hours if I decide to go on this one. Then the real fun will begin, the million & one questions I'll be asking here. You guy's will end up boot'n me off the forum. As stated once before, I know 0% about boats. I guess everyone needs to start somewhere. I wish I could afford to go to the dealer & pick out a brand new one..........Powerball would be the only way for that. Thanks for all comments & advice, maxxie

Maxxie, focus on the motor when you next go shopping. Get an outboard that runs well and has been well maintained--that's where the money is. if it's running, you can use the boat while fixing it up. Doesn't work the other way. And outboards are a lot more interchangeable, practically speaking, than an I/O.

Unless you want to spend all your free time fixing and none riding/fishing, get the most basic simple open hull you can. The simplest is a jon boat design--nothing is hidden. The worst is a sofa boat where you have to remove decks and upholsered parts to work under them, and then spend a lot of time reinstalling unless you want the boat to look like crap. in between: center console, simple dual console, "roll your own" like a privateer, carolina skiff or chincoteague scow.

So start simple, enjoy using it rather than fixing it, and keep an eye out for the next deal to move up into. You don't want to dump a lot of money and time into a boat and find you don't use it much and can't sell it.
You will never, ever, recoup the money you put into fixing up a boat you use, unless you are a pro at flipping, restoring classics, or putting an almost new motor on it. A boat is not an investment an more than a steak is.

Re: Max HP O/B on 17'?

Good advice from HC above. Maxxie, I can totally appreciate wanting to get on the water cheap. My first boat was $200 and my current one was $1000. I've restored both. Check out any of the Starcraft threads in the restoration section. You'll see why we like these hulls so much. With an aluminum, you don't have to worry about rotted stringers. And if the deck and transom are rotted, it's a fairly simple weekend job to replace them. Starcraft, Sylvan, Blue Fin, Sea Nymph, Smokercraft and others all make great runabout hulls that make great budget fixer-uppers. With a super-cheap fiberglass boat, you've got a 90% chance of needing to completely rebuild it to make is safe and sound. You can drop over a grand on fiberglassing materials. It's still do-able and lots of guys in the resto section are going amazing jobs on glass hulls but my recommendation for anyway trying to get on the water on a strict budget is aluminum hull, outboard motor. Good luck.

By the way, I went to Penn State-Behrend and have a buddy living in Northeast and one in Harborcreek. Real nice area if you can handle the snow :)

My 16' glass has a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke. I think they overdid it. I would say ~90HP max. Mine had to be steel and fiberglass reinforced in the transom. It's fast though.
